Unrivalled tomatoes…

Many of the vegetables that we Western Europeans eat as so-called fresh produce the Bulgarians would simply describe as tasteless.
The tomato is an example of quantity-not-quality production at the expense of good taste.
With supermarket goods – and not infrequently also at farmers’ markets – it is the external values in particular that count: (standard) size and colour must be right. For just this reason much is made to suit in the large-scale greenhouse and also outdoor cultivation using artificial additives – preservation methods included.

Unfortunately our palates are already accustomed to eating water- instead of beef tomatoes. And tomato condiments from the “handy squeezy bottle” help counteract the tastelessness.

Love at first bite…

When you are in Bulgaria you must try two original types of tomato:
The traditional Bulgarian beef tomato (the heart-shaped “red”) and the Caspian pink tomato (the big round “pink”).
Both types of tomato are medium-sized, well-fleshed, juicy fruits and will seduce you into love at first bite with an astonishing, unique aroma…

The fact that Bulgarian tomato seeds can already be purchased by auction on eBay raises hopes that good tomato taste will also flourish here again…
